What are the causes of lens opacification?
The most common cause of cataracts, i.e. clouding of the lens, is simply the aging of the eye lens. Similar to how we get gray hair and wrinkles, a so-called age star develops with increasing age. Some people experience symptoms by the age of 50, but most are over 60 when they develop cataracts.
But there are also other causes of cataracts, e.g. B. Injuries to the eye or severe inflammation of the inside of the eye. Various metabolic diseases can also lead to cataracts, such as: B. diabetes. Cataracts can very rarely be congenital.
What are the symptoms?
In the early stages of cataract, your eyesight will hardly be affected because the lens is only slightly clouded. Many people complain of an increasing sensitivity to glare at this stage. It occurs because the light is more strongly scattered by the clouded lens. Other people notice that their eyesight deteriorates in poor lighting conditions. Nevertheless, satisfactory eyesight is retained for a long time, the loss of vision occurs only gradually and does not cause any pain. In the later stages the symptoms become more noticeable, the colors fade and the visual acuity decreases.
Diagnosis and treatment
Cataracts can be diagnosed with very simple examination techniques, because the lens is located in the anterior segment of the eye. In addition, there are devices with which we can determine the severity of the lens opacity.
The only way to treat cataracts is through cataract surgery. When to do this, you will determine how much your eyesight is affected by the clouding of the lens. Think about how difficult it is for you to do everyday activities:
- Drive
- watch TV
- Working on the computer
- Reading or something like that
Of course we are at your side with advice. In a personal conversation we can clarify with you whether the cataract operation really brings you an advantage.
